An unusually hot and dry summer has uncovered a remarkable collection of hidden archaeological sites across Wales, allowing researchers to document ancient monuments that have remained invisible beneath fields and grasslands for decades.

Many of the sites had been recorded in previous decades, but some had not appeared so clearly for more than 20 years. Others represent entirely new archaeological discoveries.

Years ago, archaeologists often waited five to seven years for weather conditions suitable for discovering cropmarks. Today, exceptionally dry summers occur much more regularly, providing more opportunities to document buried heritage.

However, the changing climate also presents challenges. Strong winds during this year's survey season made longer aerial missions more difficult, requiring careful planning with experienced pilots.

Researchers also explained that not every archaeological feature is immediately visible. Some cropmarks appear only after digital image enhancement, where specialists adjust color bands to reveal subtle differences hidden within the landscape.

Ancient Monuments Hidden Beneath Modern Fields

This year's surveys revealed an impressive variety of archaeological sites spanning thousands of years of Welsh history.

Among the most spectacular discoveries was a 5,000-year-old Neolithic long barrow near Welshpool, whose outline appeared more clearly than at any time in the past three decades.

Archaeologists also identified:

  • Previously hidden Roman buildings inside the Roman fort of Caerhun (Canovium) in Conwy.
  • A newly discovered Iron Age or Romano-British double-ditched farmstead near Llandysul in Ceredigion.
  • First World War military practice trenches preserved beneath a golf course at Deganwy.
  • A massive Iron Age concentric enclosure near Lampeter, measuring approximately 170 metres across and believed to have served as a cattle corral around 2,000 years ago.

Together, the discoveries provide fresh insight into thousands of years of settlement, agriculture and military activity across Wales.

Advanced Technology Helps Reveal Invisible Heritage

While aerial photography remains the primary survey method, archaeologists increasingly rely on digital image processing to identify faint archaeological traces.

Some cropmarks stand out immediately from the aircraft, while others become visible only after specialists enhance the photographs using advanced imaging techniques.

These methods allow researchers to detect subtle soil and vegetation changes that would otherwise remain unnoticed, significantly improving the accuracy of archaeological mapping.

Protecting Wales' Archaeological Heritage

The aerial surveys were carried out in partnership with FlyWales pilots operating from Haverfordwest and Caernarfon Airport.

The information collected is being shared with Cadw and regional archaeological organizations responsible for protecting Wales' historic environment.

Beyond archaeology, the surveys also documented landscapes affected by recent wildfires inside Welsh National Parks, creating an important environmental record alongside the archaeological discoveries.

Every photograph collected during the project will become part of the National Monuments Record of Wales, ensuring the information remains available for future research, conservation and public education.

Cropmarks only appear under very specific weather conditions, making each heatwave an important opportunity for archaeologists.
