A revolutionary archaeological survey using LiDAR technology has uncovered compelling evidence of a vast Pre-Columbian civilization hidden beneath the dense forests of southwestern Amazonia. The discovery, published in the journal Nature, has revealed thousands of previously unknown monumental earthworks, dramatically reshaping long-held views about the ancient Amazon and the societies that once flourished there.

Researchers now estimate that the civilization, known as the Aquiry culture, occupied an area far larger than previously believed. Their findings suggest that between 24,000 and 30,000 monumental earthworks may still lie concealed beneath the rainforest canopy, making this one of the most significant archaeological discoveries ever made in the Amazon Basin.

Peering Through the Rainforest with LiDAR

Dense tropical vegetation has long prevented archaeologists from seeing what lies beneath the Amazon's forest canopy. Traditional satellite imagery can identify only a fraction of archaeological features, leaving much of the landscape hidden.

To overcome this challenge, researchers used Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR), an airborne laser-scanning technology capable of penetrating vegetation and producing highly detailed maps of the ground surface.

The research team completed more than 4,400 kilometres (2,735 miles) of aerial LiDAR surveys across the Brazilian states of Acre and Amazonas. The laser data were then combined with satellite imagery and field investigations to create the most comprehensive archaeological map of the region to date.

The results exceeded expectations.

LiDAR identified 432 monumental earthworks, but only 36 of them had previously been documented. This remarkable success demonstrates how much of Amazonia's archaeological heritage remains hidden beneath the forest.

A Civilization Far Larger Than Previously Imagined

Earlier research had already suggested the presence of sophisticated societies in parts of the Amazon. However, the new survey shows that the Aquiry civilization extended across approximately 183,000 square kilometres (70,600 square miles)—around three times larger than previous estimates.

Using statistical modelling based on the newly identified sites, researchers estimate that between 24,000 and 30,000 earthworks may exist across the region.

The sheer scale of this cultural landscape indicates that southwestern Amazonia supported one of the largest and most complex societies in pre-Columbian South America.

Monumental Earthworks Built for Ceremony and Community

The newly documented monuments include a remarkable variety of large earthworks, including:

  • Circular enclosures
  • Square and rectangular compounds
  • Multi-sided geometric structures
  • Embankments
  • Ditched ceremonial complexes

Dating from approximately 600 BC to AD 850, these monuments were likely used as ceremonial, political, and social gathering places rather than permanent settlements or military fortifications.

Their carefully planned geometric layouts demonstrate sophisticated engineering skills and organized community labour on a large scale.

Millions May Have Lived in the Ancient Amazon

One of the study's most surprising conclusions concerns population size.

Researchers estimate that the Aquiry cultural landscape may have supported between 1.25 and 3 million people during its peak between AD 100 and 300.

Such figures directly challenge the long-standing belief that the Amazon before European contact was sparsely inhabited by small, isolated communities.

Instead, the evidence suggests that extensive populations lived within carefully managed landscapes connected by networks of ceremonial centres and agricultural areas.

Ancient Farmers Helped Shape the Rainforest

The study also highlights how these communities actively transformed their environment.

Rather than simply adapting to the rainforest, the inhabitants cultivated crops including:

  • Maize
  • Manioc (cassava)
  • Squash
  • Beans
  • Peanuts

They also encouraged the growth of economically valuable trees such as:

  • Brazil nut
  • Peach palm

Over many centuries, these agricultural practices helped shape the composition and biodiversity of the modern Amazon rainforest.

The findings support growing evidence that large areas of today's forest are, in part, the product of long-term human landscape management rather than untouched wilderness.

LiDAR Is Transforming Amazonian Archaeology

The success of this project demonstrates the extraordinary impact of LiDAR technology on modern archaeology.

By revealing landscapes hidden beneath dense vegetation, LiDAR allows archaeologists to identify ancient roads, settlements, ceremonial centres, and engineered landscapes that would otherwise remain invisible.

The survey detected around five times more archaeological sites than satellite imagery alone, proving that conventional mapping techniques significantly underestimate the scale of Amazonian archaeology.

As LiDAR surveys expand into other regions of the Amazon Basin, researchers believe many more hidden civilizations may await discovery.

Rewriting the History of the Amazon

For decades, many scholars viewed the pre-Columbian Amazon as a sparsely populated wilderness with limited human impact.

This new research paints a very different picture.

The evidence suggests that sophisticated societies engineered vast landscapes, constructed monumental architecture, practiced intensive agriculture, and maintained thriving populations long before European colonization.
