Using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) alongside high-resolution LiDAR mapping, researchers reconstructed the ancient terrain to understand how Maya households interacted with their environment.Their goal was simple: discover how ordinary families organized their homes and produced enough food to survive in a challenging tropical landscape.


Homes Carefully Positioned Within the Landscape

Excavations revealed clusters containing around 30 to 40 modest residential buildings.These housing groups were separated by open areas measuring approximately 200 metres, leading archaeologists to question why so much space had been left between settlements.

Digital terrain analysis provided the answer.Researchers discovered that Maya families intentionally built their homes on slightly elevated ground, while lower-lying areas remained open.This arrangement allowed rainwater to naturally flow downhill into the open spaces, creating ideal conditions for cultivating crops.Rather than being empty land, these areas likely served as productive household gardens and agricultural plots.

Ancient Rainwater Engineering

One of the most significant findings concerns how the Maya managed seasonal rainfall.GIS slope analysis demonstrated that natural gradients directed rainwater away from homes and toward lower agricultural zones.Hydrological models showed that water consistently accumulated in these open spaces, creating fertile areas that could support crops during different seasons.

Researchers believe the gardens produced enough food not only to sustain individual households but possibly to generate agricultural surpluses.If confirmed by future studies, excess crops could have been exchanged with nearby communities through local trade networks.

Although direct evidence of these exchanges has yet to be identified, the carefully planned landscapes suggest that agriculture formed the economic backbone of many Maya settlements.Future sediment analysis and phosphorus testing will help determine exactly what crops were grown and how intensively these landscapes were cultivated.
