For decades, archaeologists generally interpreted these linear features as construction ramps used to transport building materials for Pharaoh Sneferu's Red Pyramid.

According to the researchers, the structures possess several characteristics more closely associated with ancient dams than transportation infrastructure.

Each extends between approximately 600 and 700 metres across the valley and is firmly anchored into the surrounding hillsides—a layout considered typical of large-scale water-retention systems.

A Sophisticated Hydraulic Network

The study proposes that the eastern structure served as the primary dam, capturing seasonal floodwaters flowing through Wadi Dahshur.

A second structure positioned further west may have functioned as a secondary check dam, helping regulate water movement while trapping sediment before excess water entered a nearby diversion channel.

Researchers also identified what appears to be a duckbill-shaped weir, a design that could have controlled water flow with remarkable efficiency.

Hydrological modelling indicates that Wadi Dahshur was connected to tributaries extending into Wadi Taflah, creating a watershed covering between 100 and 400 square kilometres.

Such a catchment area would have supplied substantial seasonal runoff capable of supporting large hydraulic installations.

Built During Pharaoh Sneferu's Reign

The proposed water management system lies immediately adjacent to the Red Pyramid, one of ancient Egypt's most significant monuments.

Constructed around 2550 BC during the reign of Pharaoh Sneferu, the Red Pyramid is widely regarded as the world's first successfully completed smooth-sided pyramid.

Its successful design became the architectural model for later pyramids, including the Great Pyramid of Giza built by Sneferu's son, Khufu.

Because of the structures' proximity to the pyramid, researchers believe they may have been directly connected to construction activities.

Rather than serving as transport ramps, the dams could have stored and redirected water needed for moving materials, supplying workers, or supporting other construction operations.

Remote Sensing Provides New Perspective

Unlike traditional archaeological excavations, the study relied primarily on remote sensing technologies.

Satellite imagery allowed researchers to map the surrounding landscape in unprecedented detail, while watershed analysis reconstructed how ancient floodwaters would have flowed across the valley thousands of years ago.

This combination of digital mapping and hydrological modelling enabled scientists to evaluate whether the stone structures were capable of functioning as dams.

The results strongly suggest they were positioned to intercept and regulate seasonal water flows rather than facilitate stone transport.

More Evidence Still Needed

Although the findings are intriguing, the researchers stress that the hypothesis remains preliminary.

The proposed dam system has not yet been confirmed through archaeological excavation, and no direct dating evidence currently links the structures to the construction of the Red Pyramid.

Future field investigations will be necessary to determine precisely when the structures were built, how they operated, and whether they were indeed part of a large-scale hydraulic network.

If future excavations support the theory, the discovery would significantly reshape historians' understanding of Old Kingdom engineering.
